Spain 2024: Nebulossa with ‘Zorra’
Nebulossa provided the biggest upset of our first Super Saturday this year after overthrowing odds-on favourite St.Pedro:
New flaws in Spain's system were made clear here with a definite amount of tactical voting involved to lead us to this result. The juries gave Spain Chanel and should have stuck to their guns again, whilst neither they nor the televote should be aware in such detail of the standings. I'm not sure on the exact solution and this isn't the time anyway but there's much to ponder for Rtve. It's bad enough getting voting figures San Marino could come close to, Spain are now also taking their sloppy seconds…
Staging leaves much to be desired and gives this a trashy image that is quite off putting though that is in keeping with the songs theme I guess. Spain's benidorm fest crowd and tiny voting pool are not particularly reflective of wider European tastes as a whole but it's probably not worth toning down your bare cheeked dancers in an attempt to get a wider pool of voters. I think this is a scenario where going balls to the wall, or balls barely concealed in this instance, is the more profitable approach in solidifying the USP.
That our singer is pretty immobile, unable to do much more than grin into the camera yet still missing notes all over the place despite almost talking through the majority of this is an issue we're stuck with and something jurors should punish.
Bottom 5 is the default prediction which I'm not going to differ from that and that jury score in particular could be disastrous. I won't quite say 0 as there's a long way to go and that side of the equation is pretty weak so far too. There's also the chance the most serene Republic now wish to ascociate themselves with Nebullosa or thank them for trying out last year. Clutching at straws admittedly.
There's a bit more hope on the televote with a certain anthemic quality to the song which is admittedly catchy and there is a bit of a "slay queen" demographic who could go for this even if it's vastly inflated and exaggerated in the fandom. Gustav's entry for Belgium last year somewhat fits that bill as the camper than camp “so Eurovision” song that this may hope to emulate, though I must stress again, only on the televote if anywhere.
All in all, it does have to be said this is a poor showing from Spain (30 pts combined?) but I'm not looking at an all time low scenario just yet. Depending on what Germany select, this is looking like the worst pre-qualified entry and therefore by default the favourite for last place given the historical trends.
