The UK 2023: Mae Muller with ‘I Wrote A Song’

The home soil entry is here with Mae Muller the pick in an attempt to follow on from last year.

The UK's price was one that only really appealed a couple of times over the last months, being incredibly short for a country with one good year. There were decent rumours doing the rounds but it's evident that those backing did not know what we were getting…

Unfortunately, Mae seems to have followed the Alexander Ryback school of songwriting of starting at the “believe in it” mark. I want to take a second to compare this to Israel which was released less than 12 hours earlier: whereas that is also a pop song sure to feature a dance number it has so much more intricacies and pretentions built in to it which is necessary to get juries on board with your female ‘bops’. This has the more natural flow but at a cost of being one of the more repetitive songs in the field and the variation we do get in the bridge comes of more cringe worthy than anything. There are sadly better options this year and despite being sceptical on the UK this does feel a surprisingly big step backwards.

I'm not sure if there's room for much live elevation and at best this may hold its own-at worst it could get messy.

There's not much here for juries unless any hosting goodwill is out there and I'm not expecting a great televote. Not being in the bottom 5 might be the goal and the random draw for where this goes could play a part in that.
