Belgium 2023: Gustaph with ‘Because of You’

Following a slight upset in the national final, Gustaph has booked his ticket to Liverpool in May:

Belgium have managed to find the holy quadrilogy of national final disappointment in ending up with a song that none of the juries, televoters, fandom or betting community thought was best. My working theory is that language played a key role here with the two best options being in French in a nation with a heavy linguistic divide. Anyway, that doesn't excuse the juries in having this above The Starlings (poor performance or not).

There's not much point in dwelling on what could have been but there were at least 3 better options passed over to land on an almost certain NQ. This is camp for camp's sake which despite Eurovision's reputation is a poor foundation for success. Besides the cliche positive lyrics there's nothing here. The performance I'd class as passable but it's hardly the amazing live elevation an upset of this magnitude often needs.

Going back to 100% televote for the semi finals shouldn't make much of a difference. Belgium don't have a real base to rely on but juries wouldn't have been pushing this through regardless. I could analyse it further but at the end of the day if we can't find 10 better songs to make it through then the contest is in trouble.

Gustaph is in over his head on an international stage with ‘Because of You’ and whilst this is a very critical review and we've all had a bit of a laugh I wish him well and hope he embraces the experience- I think everyone can agree the joke is on the juries and Belgian Publieck.
