Czech Republic 2022: We Are Domi with ‘Lights Off’

Somehow we have our second selection for 2022 all before a power ballad has even been belted out by an Albanian diva. The Czech Republic have concluded their selection with We Are Domi heading to Turin:

The scoring system for Escz may have been a little complicated, but it has resulted in the best entry being selected.

It's no surprise to see ‘Lights Off’ storm the jury vote in the selection but some of this love should remain. Its the sort of modern, credible, playlist friendly song that will be looked at kindly. After jurors have voted for their favourites, this is perfect filler in their top 10 and consistent points should feed through. It's the televote that may hold this one back slightly. Our lead singer is likeable and the group don't look out of place but a strong visual package is needed to give this the energy to reach out of the TV.

With that in consideration, these pop group efforts can be difficult to stage (Latvia 2017 and North Macedonia/Former Yugoslav 2018 come to mind) whilst the Czechs brought one of the worst performances of the year with ‘Omaga’ last time out. Good camerawork, lighting and I'd suggest a truck load of colourful pyro for the instrumental are essential to translate a great radio song to the big stage.

The semi final allocation draw won't have much bearing on their chances with the Czechs not having any significant diaspora or neighbourly voting. The only slight thing may be a lean towards having the UK and Germany out of the big 5 for jury points (countries more likely to send this themselves than the other 3) and being paired with Norway could only help.

If Rai and the producers stick to the typical Swedish style running order, this could be used to open or close somewhere too.

Unless 2022 turns into a strong year, Domi can be hopeful of qualification and a respectable finish.
