Denmark 2024: SABA with ‘Sand’

DMGP is over with for another year with odds-on favourite Saba fending off a charge from 2014’s Basim to head across the Oresunds bridge to Malmo:

Denmark are prone to doing Denmark-y things so I take their public vote with a pinch of salt, but 3rd in a superfinal behind Janus Wiberg and well off Basim (likeable but horrible song) is not a sign of strength. In fact, this entry itself is pretty Danish in it’s middle-of-the-road-ness and presentation; if they didn’t massively take to it in that field what chance does this have in a 100% televote, larger, more competitive, more diverse semi final with another first half draw to fight against?

SABA has a good vocal and should become more comfortable over the next few months but she was stiff performing this, explaining the public’s preference for the charismatic Basim in particular. The song also doesn’t give a lot to buy into and has been heard many times before, including every one of it’s lyrical cliches. That adds concerns to where exactly DR can take this given their poor recent record at staging. This is the type of entry that get’s lost amongst the madness rather than stands out and Denmark don’t have as many points in the bank against some others in this semi.

I don’t see this qualifying currently and only a few duds from the countries left to reveal/select will change my mind.
