Luxembourg 2025: Laura Thorn with 'La Poupee Monte Le Son'
In a surprise to absolutely no one, Laura Thorn became the third entry to join the lineup for Basel, an ideal place for her old school Eurovision inspired number.
I remember liking this less when it was first released than upon this recent inspection, even if this style of music will never really appeal to me. Laura performs this with a lot of charisma and enthusiasm and gives a good vocal considering the at times challenging choreography. Considering a typical Eurovision level and what many countries have shown so far, Luxembourg are starting from a good base and need only make refinements to their staging, rather than an overhaul: this is already a pretty solid package.
Following the semi final allocation draw today we do have a bit more to go on in that regard and Luxembourg should be satisfied even if they are missing the rest of the Benelux bloc and Switzerland. You'd imagine France will be scoring this highly, as should Austria having sent one of the more similar recent entries (Loin d'ici, 2016) whose result this may replicate. A second half draw is a big plus too. I’d expect this to be through and there’s (so far) a good niche to this that should ensure some number of televotes there too.
Juries are the more interesting element here and where this will likely do best. There's a clear call for these votes with the climax of the song being devoted to big jury notes that will probably be cleaned up further by May. That is coupled with this coming from an old Eurovision country and being an homage to the contest's history. It’s very on the nose but older demographics and those with an affinity to the classic era will likely be pulled in. Don’t be surprised to see this in triple figures before the televote points are handed out, provided the staging concept and outfits are beefed up.
Overall, probably higher midtable but a low top 10 is not out of the question.
