Malta 2025: Miriana Conte with 'Kant (Singing)'
Little Malta are going bold this year with Miriana ready to show off her Kant to all of Europe:
Over the previous 4 years of running this site, there's been plenty of time for some bad early predictions to mount up. A lot of those tend to be underestimating a song but if this one goes south it will buck that trend as I have high hopes for Malta this year.
This is primarily a meme but those can be dangerous with every year having several, a couple of which often turn out to be threats. So far, there is Finland and in all probability Estonia in that group but it’s actually this one I think has the higher ceiling.
That is because I feel this has some jury potential too and tonally there is more of a message behind it that you can reach for - the vague female self empowerment kind with some of the on the nose lyrics whilst Erika is just horny and Tommy wacky. I was never a fan or believer in Toy but there are more than a couple of similarities here and enough time might have passed for something similar to work again - Eurovision can be cyclical in that way.
The title of this and chorus is of course a cheap yet simultaneously genius way in order to grab attention and there is a viral possibility here. The song beneath is nothing spectacular but is an effective pop song with a typical, memorable structure.
Miriana could easily be unvoteable but there's a knowing, self aware wink in the performance. Her vocal is strong and there are some big notes in here to show it off. Of course, I do want to see more from the staging. From the bridge onwards this is pretty good and the pink spacehoppers are a fitting silly gimmick. There’s good progression leading up to that but there is a need for more earlier on than the pretty standard dance routine we have. The song overall is set to be revamped and if this only comes down to modernising and enriching the production I’ll be happy enough.
Malta are, yet again like Finland, in the second half of semi 2 and a potential show closer. This is less fitting as a climax but given Malta's qualification woes and Erika maybe needing more time to rig up her giant mic could get the call. Either way, Malta should be qualifying for the first time in the new 100% televote semi era.
This really could land anywhere in the final and I do mean anywhere, 1st-15th in the televote, 4th-20th in the jury vote, so yes, at the very top end if everything lands, this is a possible contender in my opinion and feels more likely than Belgium or Finland to win from the selected entries. Feel free to tell me in the comments that I am deluded.
Of course, it is more likely that everything does not fall as needed so my official early prediction will be a bit lower than that.
