Slovenia 2023: Joker Out with ‘Carpe Diem’

In amongst the 5 national selections Slovenia also entered the mix with our first (officially released) internal selection of the year:

This is alright from Slovenia, it surpasses my low expectations and is an improvement from one of the worst performing countries in the contest.

On the negatives there's not much reason to listen beyond the halfway point and it is a track that doesn't really commit to any genre or style. It’s neither really great nor really different which puts it in a similar enough position to our band from Ireland yesterday.

Slovenia do however have the far better draw in the second half of semi 2. They start on close to 0 but still, there’s a chance at qualification here. There's a higher ceiling than the two confirmed entries of Albania and Belgium so far but we'll see how the rest of the countries end up- if Ollie was to make it through in Eesti Laul for example, I'd definitely be more concerned.

Staging is a big question always with Slovenia but there’s room for something here and good camerawork is essential.

Slovenia aren't completely dead on arrival for once and can be satisfied with that.
