Norway 2025: Kyle Alessandro with ‘Lighter’

A convincing MGP win sees Kyle Alessandro head to Eurovision for Norway.

Things can change quickly in the Eurovision world with Norway going from annual blind contenders, to adding another last place to the record books, to what was laughing stock of the year in seeing the two most highly rated MGP names pull out late, and very late in the day, leaving a very underpar field.

Opinions can change so fast in the Eurovision world in fact that there's almost been a further 180 degree turn on their chances and there are seriously people discussing a top 10, or this being the jury winner from the current field.

I’m not as impressed and Norway remains one that I don’t see doing any damage should it make the final. Lighter is a very standard song to me and one that works better in a. A smaller field and b. Domestically. The boy bop, teen girl focused songs often struggle in the transition to an environment with just more interesting entries. Compatriots Marcus and Martinus for Sweden last year may be the ambition but this is a very inferior product all around.

Kyle is actually better than this entry I think and is a likeable frontman. The vocals are very supported here shall we say but are not of primary importance to this piece and Eurovision isn't as strict anymore in this regard anyway. The chance is lost to impress, but you're not actively marked down unless you are audibly missing a stack.

To me this has a lot in common with Norway’s 2012 effort from Tooji; something tossed above the border from Sweden that can sneak through and then gets completely lost. In the semis Norway have a second half draw and it’s a fairly favourable lineup all things considered. I assume Belgium will be prioritised for the pimp slot but this could be next in line for that. I’d say this might be more in than out overall given my expectations for Cyprus, Croatia's lineup and Azerbaijan and San Marino’s track records in that half, but it is vulnerable.
