Ireland 2025: Emmy with ‘Laika Party’

Another year and another upset in Eurosong with Emmy picking up a convincing win there and will now blast off to Basel:

Emmy Is fortunate that RTE and Ireland are deeply misogynistic with an ultra straight opinion on what a Eurovision song should be. Oh, actually she's fortunate to have put in the only votable performance with this camp little Europop number and Bobbi Arlo is talking shite.

Votable sums this up and after a run of 5 pretentious and overly important songs and performances, there was plenty to be said for just a happy little song and Emmy's cutesy routine. I dismissed this a bit coming into the show but this did look the likely winner as soon as the performances were all over.

Emmy gave a good rendition and whilst her vocal isn't to everyone's taste and isn't going to wow many jurors it was plenty fine here and she’ll be even more protected at Eurovision.

This also worked without much staging meaning there is room for a big improvement in Basel. The space/dog gimmick of the song does offer a lot of visual and meme potential. It will be important not to over do it but there is certainly room to turn the dial up on this.

As a final plus point, much like Laika being blasted up in space alone, there’s not going to be any direct genre competition here. Luxembourg has been called the other junior-esque entry but I think the pair don’t overly compete.

So overall, yeah, I’m pretty positive on this. I’d say more positive than average actually particularly on qualification chances but there is no hope of this actually winning, even if it’s received a bit of backing. Juries will likely have this in the bottom half of their rankings, and even the televote feels capped at around 120 pts in the final. In the semi Ireland have to deal with a first half draw but do have the Anglophone bloc of Malta, The UK and Australia voting which is on paper one of the better pools of countries they could get. Not having Norway to lend Emmy some support is a blow but Denmark and Finland should be liking this scandi sound enough. Early days still but Ireland feel like a qualifier here.
