Spain 2025: Melody with ‘Esa Diva’

After a tight Jury 3rd place, the televote support that had been implied all week and before for Melody came through sending Esa Diva to Basel:

I still appreciate what Spain are attempting to do with Benidorm Fest and they are continually working on it but we are somehow going backwards every year. The biggest problem is honestly that audience tastes are just not reflective of what will bring a good result or what deserves to win. Perhaps we need a year with no songs about being a Diva or a Queen or a Feminista. If Spain want to model themselves on Italy's Sanremo they should take note fun camp entries make up 10% of the typical lineup - not the 90% here. Anyway, that's just a suggestion for next year. There’s lots to be said for just sending what you like but this will be another disappointing result at Eurovision.

The fact there’s a Swedish team including Thomas G:son behind this could be cause for optimism but is a moot point once we have received the song. This might be a multiple Eurovision winnining writer you have, but he’s also a multiple time NQ'er and has brought Spain finishes of a strong 10th but also, 20th and 21st. Spain's success with Chanel is also looking more and more of an anomaly and I don’t need to say this is a mile away from that and far closer in quality to 2016's Barei. Just looking through Spain's past results similar bottom 5 outcomes were achieved in 2009, 2011 and of course last year with Spanish upbeat females.

Melody is better than this song and her attempts to improve this live betray that sense. There is staging potential here but she will need to ironically tone down some of the more Diva-esque antics. She's capable of a good vocal but that is the only thing going for this from a jury perspective. Both that and the televote will likely be sub 20 points and this is the early contender for last place, which will be hard to dislodge.

There is a revamp incoming but it would need to be very substantial to change my views on this.
