The UK 2025: Remember Monday with 'What The Hell Just Happened'
The worst kept secret of the year was confirmed earlier today with Remember Monday finally announced for Basel.
Opinions on this aside, the one common view is that the BBC are prioritising the jury vote this year and that is a fair enough strategy. It's one of the current luxuries of being in the big 5 and yeah the televote is traditionally the weaker area for the UK (although that is something of a self fulfilling prophecy)
I don't know if those who selected this appreciate quite how big the disparity is with this, most of which is down to a big inaccessibility and votability issue for the public. The song is theatrical and stop start, packed full of different themes and homages, that the press release and a lot of the early domestic press reviewers love.
These are also elements that make a song a tough sell to a Europe wide audience on a first listen. The harmonies are great and will be live, that does not result in votes. I am far more of an armchair reviewer but from a jury view also I feel the flow is off and there are some amateur elements in there (a one two, a one two three - really?) I can see what they are going for with the humour and lyrics but there's no cohesive meaning there or narrative, more a collection of buzzwords thrown together in the hope something sticks and can become a meme or tiktok. This does sound like a bunch of Danes are trying to be down with the kids - no idea why...
I'm not sure overall where the jury score will fall for this but it will likely be in the 8th-15th range. I am pretty sure this will be sub 20 points on the televote. It's a disparity which will again lead to the "everyone hates us" brigade in the UK but will instead be down to sending a song that doesn't stand out or offer a real call to vote in a field of 26. There's a niche to this but the "no-ones favourite" tag is still going to be applicable.
I wouldn't mind to be wrong on the televote and wish the girls well, I just feel the UK this year have shown either a real defeatist attitude and are settling for midtable or still do not know what makes people pick up the phone to vote for an entry.
Anyway, knee jerk reaction to this was bottom 5 but overall considering how the maths often breaks down lower midtable is more likely.
